Write your robot story in your preferred word processing software.

Your robot tale needs to be about 800 words long and can be in any genre you like (e.g action, thriller, comedy, mystery). Make sure you include a beginning, middle and an end.

Entry Criteria

  1. The Once Upon a Robot Competition is open to UK children in Key Stage 2 (aged 7 to 11 years, see Terms and Conditions below)
  2. You do not have to be registered at a UK school to enter.
  3. Only individual entries will be accepted.
  4. Your entry must include:
    – a title
    – a fictional story about one or more robots of up between 400 and 900 words.
  5. Your entry must be entirely your own work.
  6. You must complete our online form no later than the 23rd April 2023 to be in with a chance to win.

Terms & Conditions

  1. Entries to the Draw a Robot competition are open from 10th January to 23rd April 2023.
  2. To enter, children must be born between 1st September 2011 and 31st August 2015 and residing in the United Kingdom.
  3. Entries must be submitted via our online form by 23:59 BST on the 23rd April 2023.
  4. Stories longer than 900 words (not including the title) or shorter than 400 words will not be considered. Hand written entries will not be accepted.
  5. Entries must be submitted as a word processing document (e.g. .txt, .doc, .docx, .odt, .rtf). PDF entries will not be accepted.
  6. Entries will be scored, by an independent judging panel, on: the creativity of the story; the clarity of the narrative; and the inclusion of an exciting plot twist.
  7. By entering, you grant permission to the EPSRC UK-RAS Network to use your submitted story, name, and age in promotional materials both online and in print.
  8. Winners will be invited to a virtual award ceremony on the 22nd June as part of the UK Festival of Robotics.
  9. The UK-RAS Network will cover UK travel costs for the competition winner, a friend, and up to two parents / guardians to visit the Extreme Robotics Lab in Birmingham, up to a maximum value of £250 (subject to the presentation of suitable receipts).
